Previously visited in 1970's and the transformation was amazing. Think that it is now a serious rival to Edinburgh. Hotel good but the decor was the same as our last visit in 1997 and now needs updating. The approach was always the weak point but once on the site you are unable to see the Grangemouth refinery.

Stayed at the Apex City in the Grasmarket. Ideal for the Olld Town - Royal Mile etc. Hotel welcoming arrived early am they took my mobile number to send a text when room ready - 45mins. Lots of pubs and restaurants opposite the hotel. Try the Hop on Hop off bus tour. Also good way of travel as tickets last 24 hours. Do visit Mary King Close for an experience of the historic town

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and Autumn, when the winds whip the leaves around its intriguing corners, and icy showers give way to glorious bright blue skies, is the optimal time to visit. We stayed in the Apex City Centre hotel, perfectly located on the Grassmarket in the old town - modern, hyper-friendly, warm and comfortable. Big, luxurious room - only comment would be that the bed was a little on the narrow side (romantic, though!) The absolute highlight of the stay was a bracing walk up Arthur's Seat, an easy to climb mini mountain whose summit is only about a 25 minute walk from the town centre. From the top there are 360 degree views over the city, Leith, the sea and the scottish mountains. Absolutely stunning! Midweek was a wonderful time to visit - tourists seemed thin on the ground, everything was open and we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Duchaers IPA, THE Edinburgh brewed pint, is creamy, thirst-quenching and delicious. The brewery do a guide to Edinburgh pubs with a forward by Ian Rankin, and I kept this in my bag as we walked around. Each time we fancied a rest, I whipped it out and found the nearest recommended pub - they were all excellent.

Unfortunately, on arrival we met with reception and was advised they had received no booking via Superbreak. We had to wait until this was sorted. The last thing we wished to hear on arrival in the evening after travelling for 2+ hours. The staff at the hotel handled the situation well and resolved the issue in a satisfactory manner and in acceptable time.

I took my dad to Edinburgh for a long weekend break as his 80th birthday present. I had booked us into The Apex City hotel because of its proximity to the castle. We were not disappointed, the hotel was lovely & in Grassmarket with plenty of restaurants, bar's and cafe's on the doorstep. The rooms were huge, beautifully fitted out & had a large bathroom with seperate walk in shower..essential as my dad cannot climb in & out of baths or showers over baths! I had asked for a front facing room, we were given a side room which I was a little disappointed with initially. However upon speaking to guests with front facing rooms, they were a bit noisy for them because of 'the fringe' revellers late at night. The side room had a view of the castle, so I was happy. The room had all the extra's that one would expect from a 5* hotel, although it was a 4*..the only down side was that the hotel advertised ALL rooms were equipped with 'state of the art' flat screen tv's & dvd players. Our room had just a normal tv...a small gripe really! The bathroom could have done with a towel rail near the wash basin, as there was nowhere to put the towel except on the bath behind you...again a suggestion for the hotel as it would make things a little easier, but nothing major. The staff in the hotel were very friendly, accomodating & all went out of there way to make our stay a comfortable & happy one. The breakfasts choice was plentiful & varied, the hot breakfast was not 'self service' as so many top hotels now offer, and often are cold. Instead there was a large 'hot' selection which was cooked as & when to order, which was lovely. Staff were very busy but we waited just minutes for anything. The hotel was doing a special offer for evening meals 3 courses for 25GBP for 2 people. So we booked a table for the saturday evening, before going to the Tattoo. The food was served quickly, beautifully presented and delicious. We both ordered black bream for the main course & lemon tart for dessert...both lovely & cooked to perfection. The wine was a little over priced for a glass, but if you bare in mind it's a hotel, and that's usually the 'norm'. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable weekend...except for the torrential rain 20 minutes into the Tattoo...sadly that was out of everyone's control. I would most definitely stay here again & recommend anyone else to do so.
